Jon Stewart Trades Celeb Interviews For Cows And Pigs

Jon Stewart could have a very busy retirement ahead of him: He and his wife, Tracey, have purchased a New Jersey farm and intend to turn the property into a sanctuary for farm animals, according to Farm Sanctuary.

While Stewart doesn't usually address the topic in public, in recent months his interest in animal welfare has become evident. In December, he tore apart New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for vetoing an anti-gestation-crate pig welfare bill that had the support of 93 percent of the state's residents.

He also invited Farm Sanctuary co-founder Gene Baur on his show earlier this month, and the organization recently named a pair of rescued sheep Jon and Tracey.

And Tracey Stewart, who's vegan, is working on a book, "Do Unto Animals," that's due out in October. The Stewarts currently live with several animals, including two pigs, two horses and three rabbits; Tracey recently told Farm Sanctuary that "promises of animal shelter visits in exchange for completed homework are the norm in the Stewart household."

Stewart is set to retire from "The Daily Show" on Aug. 6, when he'll apparently be trading in his suits for overalls.
