Baby Capuchin Makes Its First Tool

Animal lovers in the U.K. are currently enjoying the newest BBC nature documentary, titled Wild Brazil. The first episode aired this week, and the preview for next week's episode includes a segment on the very clever tufted capuchin.

The tufted capuchin is one of the most intelligent of all monkeys, according to researchers like Kazuo Fujita, a psychology professor at Kyoto University who focuses on nonhuman cognition. Fujita notes that they demonstrate "advanced physical intelligence" as well as social intelligence. The capuchin family is an adept maker and user of tools, like shaping a stick to snag sap from inside a tree. But baby capuchins still have to learn how to make and use tools, and sometimes that takes time.
